Quality of Memory Foam Toppers

So you have decided that you want to put a new memory foam topper on your bed. Do not just rush out and buy the cheapest one you can find. If it’s cheap, there’s probably a reason behind it, remember you get what you pay for.

Just to mention a few, some of the memory foam topper brands that you may run across, or might like to research are.

  • sealy posturepedic mattress
  • simmons mattress
  • serta memory foam
  • novaform mattress

These are just a few of the namebrand memory mattress topper’s out there. But there are a lot of retail stores that carry their own offbrand memory foam topper’s. A few places I have found inexpensive toppers are Wal-Mart, Costco, Sam’s, Kmart, and Target. Not to say all inexpensive things are not good, but there are a few factors that you can look at when purchasing a memory foam mattress topper.

One of the most important aspects of a memory foam topper is its density. The Posturepedic brand memory foam mattress has pretty much a monopoly over all the rest when it comes to quality. Their standard in memory foam mattress toppers in Density is,  5.34 pounds, were as most average memory foams average around 4 to 4 1/2 pounds. If you are purchasing a foam mattress topper in a box at a department store, pick it up and see how heavy the box feels, the heavier the better.

Another big point to look at when purchasing a foam mattress topper is to find out if the topper was compressed and then packaged, or vacuum sealed in a package to compress it. If it was compressed first then packaged, it will return to its original shape and size, and give you a long life possibly over five years. However, if it was vacuum sealed first to give it to a small size to fit inside a box memory mattress topper may never achieve its original shape and size. Vacuum sealing them also shortens the memory foams lifespan. If you are unsure of how the manufacturer packaged the foam mattress you can usually call them and they will tell you.

The average life expectancy of a lower density foam topper is around 4 to 5 years. I wish that time it may begin to become too soft and the need to be replaced. A higher density foam mattress will last a bit longer. There are many reviews online, but asking a person that you know who has slept on a particular brand of memory foam is one of the best ways to figure out if that memory foam would be good for you, and a good value. The only thing better than asking someone, is to go out and try several foams yourself and see which one you like the best.
